Japanese Cultural Topic No.35
Maiko

The status of Maiko is training. It is said that it takes five years to become Geisha.

An older geisha teaches Maiko various things of being a Geisha such as Japanese traditional dance, Shamisen, and singing.

The appearance of Maiko is brighter than Geisha. They wear bright Furisode which has long sleeves. The Obi reaches the backs of their knees. It seems difficult to walk. In fact, Maiko to take very small steps, which is considered attractive by Japanese tradition.

I think Miko symbolizes the authentic beauty of Japan. If you have a chance to go to Kyoto, please go teahouse. You must be satisfied with the performance of Maiko.
