| "Hari-Kuyou" The requiem service for broken needles.
The requiem service for broken needles called "Hari-Kuyou" is held on February 8 in Kanto reagoin and December 8 in Kansai reagion at near Shinto shrine.People who involved in sewing take time off and hope improvement of their skill.
The broken needles are stuck on something soft (Tofu or Konjac). After that they are wrapped with papers and stored in the Shrine. Another reagion, they are floated down rivers.
What makes people tick, usually needles are used for something hard.So make it rest by sticking in soft Tofu.
Sewing was a essential work. Until the middle of Meiji period, most of women was doing sewing in the home. Lately sewing is taught in the dressmaking school. |
