Ichimatsu Moyou(Checker Board Pattern)


Ichimatsu is the name of the Kabuki actor Ichimatsu Sanogawa in Edo era.
He played a role with wearing this pattern hakama once,
and this pattern got very popular among edo citizens.
Since then this pattern became like his trademark.
Those who took over his name kept wearing Ichimatsu Moyou somewhere like as the collars or obi.

In Edo era, the popular actors (and good-looking girls) are portrayed in Ukiyo-E and they can be a fashion leader.
There are many other traditional patterns named after kabuki actor's name.
